[haw-info] HAW Notes, including links to recent articles of interest

To members and friends of Historians Against the War,

Here
are a couple of notes, followed by our intended-to-be biweekly set of links to recent articles of interest.

1.  The informative and daily-updated Web site antiwar.com, sponsored by the libertarian Randolph Bourne Institute, is trying to meet a just-announced $30,000 challenge grant, with a December 2 deadline; details are on the site's home page, http://www.antiwar.com.

2.  The Agent Orange Action Group has called for protests at Montanto Chemical's January 24 annual meeting in suburban St. Louis.  For details contact Len Aldis at lenaoag@gmail.com.

[haw-info] Not Thankful for the 2012 Defense Budget! Call Your Senators Today !

Please forward widely !

While the "Super" Committee works on the federal budget for FY 2013 and beyond, under the radar the Congress is moving forward with another huge Defense budget for FY 2012. When it returns from Thanksgiving break, the Senate will be voting on a $682.5 billion Defense Authorization bill.
This continues the war in Afghanistan and wastes unconscionable amounts of money at a time when there are massive cutbacks in domestic programs at the federal, state and local levels.

Senator Jeff Merkley (OR) has just introduced Amendment No. 1174, requiring the President to present a plan "for an expedited withdrawal from Afghanistan prior to 2014." Co-sponsors are Senators Brown, Durbin, Gillibrand, Harkin, Lee, and Udall. For complete text

If your Senators are not on this list, please call them today and ask them to co-sponsor Amendment No. 1174 to the 2012 Defense Authorization bill. Remind them squandering billions of dollars on a failed war is against the best interest of American and Afghan people. Use the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) toll free number 1-877-429-0678 to call the congressional switchboard and ask to be connected to your Senators

While on the phone, it would be great if you could also urge your member of Congress to co-sponsor Rep. Barbara Lee's excellent bill: HR 780 Responsible End to the War in Afghanistan Act, which specifies that funding for US armed forces in Afghanistan shall be limited to the "safe and orderly withdrawal" of all US troops and Defense Department contractors. List of co-sponsors (65):

Please send any helpful feedback to hiscze@aol.com.

[haw-info] Trying to crush hope

Dear fellow HAW members,

I was going to write a brief, upbeat report on the small contingent we took down to OWS on Saturday (8 in all, lots of trains and subways not running that day kept others away), and how inspiring it was to see the new well-organized library tent, and to talk to the People's Librarian, who welcomed our donations of Radical History Review and other books.

My plan was to announce a book drive, since the OWS People's Library distributes books to other Occupations around the country.

But all that is no longer viable, since Mayor Bloomberg shut down OWS at 1 AM, with the 5,000 volume People's Library reportedly thrown out by the NYPD along with everything else--that's what Time Inc.'s Newsfeed says.

I think we all knew that OWS was fragile in the material sense, and now New York's power elite, to use an old-fashioned term, has finessed it--for the moment! But over these past two months, it sparked something genuinely new and full of light and hope, and we can build on that.

La lutta continua, so let's continue on, no mourning, just organizing,

Van Gosse

[haw-info] To HAW members in the NYC area--let's visit OWS next Saturday!

Dear fellow HAW members,

I am organizing a solidarity contingent for next Saturday, November 12, to show support for Occupy Wall Street.  If you are able to join us, please RSVP to me, at van.gosse@fandm.edu. We'll have banners, and you are urged to bring along a book to donate to their library.  The meet-up time is 10-10:30 AM, at 392 Broadway (below Canal), Apt. 4F.  It's a short walk from there down to Zuccotti Park. I'll have some coffee and breakfast treats for whomever shows up, but please do let me know you're coming.

This seems like an especially important time to bring solidarity and bodies down to OWS, as the weather gets colder, and Mayor Bloomberg makes noises about evicting the occupiers. Hope to see many of you this Saturday.

In solidarity,

Van Gosse
