[haw-info] HAW Notes 1/10/17: Marv Gettleman 1933-2017

To members and friends of Historians Against the War,

We regret to report the passing of historian and longtime antiwar activist Marvin Gettleman on January 7 after a long illness. A celebration of his life will be held  this Thursday the 12th at 4:00 pm at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 W. 76th Street, New York City, with a reception to follow at 771 West End Avenue, Apartment 7D.

In 2012, the HAW Steering Committee formulated the following appreciation of his role in the organization:

Marv, the Steering Committee of Historians Against the War (HAW) wishes to express its continuing appreciation of the contributions made by you, our former fellow-member.  You not only helped to get HAW started in 2003, but you played a vital role on the Steering Committee for its first half-dozen years.  Besides your eager participation in meetings, conferences, and demonstrations, you followed the path you had carved-out during the Vietnam War in the 1960s and the Central America conflicts of the 1980s - combined your roles of activist and academic historian by publishing collections of important background materials.  HAW's first pamphlet was an extensive annotated bibliography on the Middle East and the Muslim World, edited by you and Stuart Scharf and kept up-to-date by you through two revisions as more material became available.  In your work in HAW you paired the wisdom of a longtime scholar and activist with the enthusiasm of a perpetual optimist.

The email address of Marv's wife, historian Ellen Schrecker, is ellen.schrecker@gmail.com.
