[haw-info] HAW Notes 9/30/14: US war resisters in Canada; links to recent articles of interest

Note: Luke Stewart, a member of the HAW Steering Committee who is active in support of US military war resisters seeking refuge in Canada, submits the following appeal:  "In the past month, an alarming number of U.S. war resisters who are seeking sanctuary in Canada have received deportation notices as Canada joins the new war in Iraq. If sent back to the U.S., they will be court-martialed and, like others before them, possibly receive between 8 and 24 months in prison, a Bad Conduct or Dishonorable Discharge. For more information on the war resisters and how you can help, please visit: www.resisters.ca."

[haw-info] More War? National Call-in Day Tuesday Sept 16

National Day of Action on ISIS: Call Congress today!
President Obama may prefer to call it "counter-terrorism, but his recent speech made it clear that he is taking the United States into another war. In the past six weeks, the US has deployed more than 1500 troops and launched more than 150 air-strikes in Iraq. And this is merely the beginning. As early as today (Tuesday, September 16) Congress is going to vote on a controversial plan to arm and train Syrian rebels.
More than 20 national organizations (including Historians Against the War, Friends Committee on National Legislation. United for Peace and Justice, US Labor Against War, MoveOn, Peace Action American Friends Service Committee and others ) have designatedTuesday September 16 as a coordinated National Call-In Day.
Call Your Representative and Senators today!!
Using this Toll Free # for the Congressional Switchboard: 1-855-686-6927
Use of this number provided by Friends Committee on National Legislation will facilitate counting of calls
Let them know:
* You are opposed to providing arms to Syrian rebels.
* You are opposed to US military intervention in Iraq and Syria
* You favor diplomacy and humanitarian aid as the only realistic approach to the threat of ISIS.
Ask for an explanation of where your member of Congress stands on the President's plan "to destroy ISIS" through military means.
And please let us know what kind of response you receive.

[haw-info] NB!: New Resources Series from HAW on Palestine-Israel

Historians Against the War is pleased to announce a new series of publications in the works, "Conflicts in Context."

This series of pamphlets, which are to be available to teachers, activists, and others for free download and printing (under a Creative Commons copyright agreement), aims to offer historical context for contemporary conflicts, in order to deepen the understanding of participants from every side of the conflict, and so ultimately help lead to a satisfactory resolution. Our goal is to cover each topic in a scholarly fashion, with an eye to fairness, and to fidelity and attention to historical sources (which are cited). The first pamphlet in the series is now available to read and download: Alice Lynd with the assistance of Staughton Lynd, International Human Rights Law: Violations by Israel and the Problem of EnforcementYou can read and download the 32-page pamphlet at http://historiansagainstwar.org/resources/InternationalHumanRights.pdf

Historians Against the War believes the study of the past is essential to the resolution of our differences in the present.

If you are a historian interested in contributing to the series, which is being organized and edited by HAW's Palestine-Israel Working Group, please contact Van Gosse (vgosse@fandm.edu) or Jeri Fogel (fogelj@mail.montclair.edu) to discuss further.
