Historians' Letter to President Obama and Members of Congress In the face of the ongoing carnage in Gaza, members of Historians Against the War are circulating the letter below, with an initial list of signatories. We encourage you to sign it at http://historiansagainstwar.org/gazapetition.html and to quickly forward this message to fellow historians. As our numbers grow, we will seek opportunities to publicize and to forward to relevant officials. We deplore the ongoing attacks against civilians in Gaza and in Israel. We also recognize the disproportionate harm that the Israeli military, which the United States has armed and supported for decades, is inflicting on the population of Gaza. We are profoundly disturbed that Israeli forces are killing and wounding so many Palestinian children. Desperate conditions in Gaza resulting from Israeli policies have made effective evacuation of war zones virtually impossible. We regard as unacceptable the failure of United States elected officials to hold Israel accountable for such acts. As we watch the death toll mount and observe the terror of the trapped inhabitants in Gaza, we call upon you to demand a cease-fire, the immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, and a permanent end to the blockade so that its people can resume some semblance of normal life. We urge you to suspend US military aid to Israel, until there is assurance that this aid will no longer be used for the commission of war crimes. As historians, we recognize this as a moment of acute moral crisis in which it is vitally important that United States policy towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict change direction. The Steering Committee of Historians Against the War deplores the
ongoing attacks against civilians in Gaza and in Israel. We also
recognize the disproportionate harm being inflicted on the population of
Gaza by the Israeli military, which the United States has armed and
supported for decades.
We are especially disturbed that so many Palestinian children are being
killed or wounded in the attack. And we regard as unacceptable the
failure of American elected officials to hold Israel accountable for
such acts.
As we watch the death toll mount and observe the terror of the trapped
inhabitants in Gaza, we call upon our fellow historians to speak out now
for a cease-fire, for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from
Gaza, and for the suspension of all US military aid to Israel until the
aid is no longer used for the commission of war crimes.
Please write letters to your local or national newspapers or magazines
and contact your elected officials to express your opposition to U.S.
funding of the Israeli military and its attack on people in Gaza.

Ask Your Representative to Co-Sponsor House Concurrent Resolution 105 to prevent US Military Intervention in Iraq Congressional Switchboard: 202-224-3121 Historians Against the War came into existence, as the United States was edging towards an unnecessary, illegal war against Iraq. The subsequent invasion and occupation produced even more disastrous consequences than many of us had anticipated. With that country now fragmenting and its brutal government paralyzed, there are renewed calls for American military intervention. While we strongly support diplomatic initiatives to resolve this crisis, we believe that American military action will only compound the suffering on the ground and add to the instability of Iraq. Yesterday 103 members of Congress, led by Representatives Barbara Lee and Scott Rigell signed a letter to the President discouraging military intervention and insisting that Congressional authorization was required before any use of force in Iraq. Thanks to those on this list, who contributed to this effort. This has created momentum for an important new legislative initiative. Reps. Jim McGovern (D-MA). Walter Jones (R-NC) and Barbara Lee (D-CA) have just introduced House Concurrent Resolution # 105, a privileged resolution under the War Powers Resolution that will force a debate and vote on U.S. military intervention in Iraq. It will come up for a debate and vote within fifteen days of the date in which it was filed
To be effective, many co-sponsors are needed. Although you may have done this more times than you can count, please get on the phone and ask your member of Congress to co-sponsor House Concurrent Resolution 105

It expresses solidarity with the Palestinian-American scholar Rabab Abdulhadi, Director of the Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas Initiative (AMED) at SFSU. She has been the target of a vicious attack from the rightwing pro-Israel group AMCHA. I helped author the letter, which is being circulated globally.
